The makers of a new drug to treat a form of the common cold, the drug Celebrex, announced Friday, May 7, that it is going off patent.
The drug, called celecoxib, is the only new indication that has been approved to treat the condition, the company said.
The drug, which the companies also developed in Europe, has been on the market for almost two years, it said. Celebrex is an arthritis drug that is not approved for use in the United States, but it has had a lot of success in Europe.
"Celebrex is on the market in Europe, but we have no other option," the company said in a statement.

The prescription, which was initially approved in the U. S. last year, had $2.8 million in savings of about $500,000. But in June a study found that the drug was no better than the drug Pfizer tried to sell before it was tested for safety.
The New Jersey-based company, which operates nearly three million pharmaceuticals in the country, said its drugs have the same active ingredient as Lipitor and that they are similar in many ways.
